With both Ronaldo and Messi are on the verge of
breaking the Champions League all time scoring record, our expert looks
at who is likely to reach the milestone first
It is impossible to argue with either that assertion or the confidence shown by the Madrid forward who is on 70 Champions League goals, one behind his former team mate Raul, who is the competition's leading scorer at present.
Ronaldo will indeed surpass Raul's total but the question is will he be the first to do so? Just behind him in the goalscoring standings is Lionel Messi on 69 and the Argentine will be confident of adding to his tally when Barcelona travel to Ajax on Wednesday night.
Before that though Ronaldo will have the chance to make history at the Bernabeu when Madrid host Liverpool and as such is the clear favourite to break the record first.
Unibet have a special market which prices Ronaldo at just 1/3 (1.33) to become the first man to overtake Raul's record while, Messi who has scored a goal fewer and playing a day later is offered at 23/10 (3.30).
While it is practically guaranteed that one of these two men will break the record before anyone else, Unibet also offer odds of 20/1 (21.00) that it is another player who overtakes Raul's record before they can. The next player on the Champions League all time top scorer list who is still active is Chelsea's Didier Drogba in 10th place with 43 goals.
Ronaldo then is the clear and obvious favourite and given his current form he could well surpass 71 Champions League goals on Tuesday night. He has scored in each of his last 12 appearances for Real Madrid netting 20 goals in the process and can be backed at 23/10 (3.30) to open the scoring against Liverpool.
Messi meanwhile is offered at the tempting price of 79/100 (1.79) to score at any time in Amsterdam which looks generous given his prolific scoring history in this competition plus the fact that he has netted in three out of Barca's last five away matches in the Champions League.
