Chelsea and Inter are among Europe’s toughest tacklers, although Ligue 1
sides Metz and Lorient currently lead the Huawei Team Ranking ahead of
Jose Mourinho’s men in fifth position and the Serie A outfit in joint
eighth place.
Both Metz and Lorient have opted for a physical style of play this season in their battle against relegation, each averaging 84 tackles per game.
In joint third position, Olympique de Lyonnais and Sampdoria have been defending strongly as well, with both the Ligue 1 side and the Serie A outfit making 83 tackles per match, just one fewer than the leaders in the tackling ranking.
Chelsea are the first major team in the ranking in joint fifth place, with the Premier League leaders making 1066 tackles after 13 games so far, an average of 82 per match.
Meanwhile, Nice and Lens are equally aggressive in the duels to highlight Ligue 1’s physical style with 82 tackles per game, too. Inter, Nantes and Hoffenheim sit joint eighth to complete the top 10 – which includes six French teams – with an average of 81 tackles per game.
At the bottom end of the table, Real Madrid’s reluctance to make tackles catches the eye, with Carlo Ancelotti’s men going for the physical challenge on just 70 occasions per match on average, level with teams such as Eibar, Sunderland and Burnley.
Atalanta (72 tackles per game), Stuttgart (72) and Olympique de Marseille (76) are the fairest teams from Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1 respectively.
