After each round of Premier League fixtures, ESPN FC brings you its Team of the Weekend. Our panel of experts carefully selects 11 star performers, along with a manager.
Do you agree or disagree? You can have your say on those picked or overlooked in the comments section at the foot of the article or on Twitter using the hashtag #TOTW. Plus, tune in to Monday's "ESPN FC" (5:30 p.m. ET, ESPN2) for further reaction.
Right Back: It's cheating slightly to include a man who played on the left of Chelsea's defence in our team of the weekend on his natural right flank, but Cesar Azpilicueta's performance at the Hawthorns was so good we had to find a place for him. The Spaniard excelled as Chelsea snuck past West Brom, a victory hampered by the red card given to their captain John Terry -- a dismissal that of course meant the remaining 10 players had much more work to do. That didn't faze Azpilicueta, who put in an energetic display, according to Paul Mariner.
Centre Back: While Krul was excellent in the Newcastle goal at Old Trafford, his job was made a little easier by the men in front of him. Fabricio Coloccini excelled and Mariner hailed his "captain's performance".
Centre Back: Conventional wisdom states that Manchester United need to buy at least one centre-back before the end of the transfer window if their aspirations for winning the Premier League are to be taken seriously. Indeed, Louis van Gaal seems to think so as well, given his ultimately doomed chases for Real Madrid's Sergio Ramos and Valencia's Nicolas Otamendi, but if Chris Smalling continues to play like he has been doing this season, they might be able to save some money. "Confirmed his progress at the heart of United's defence," was Marcotti's verdict.
Left Back: Aleksandar Kolarov was terrific as Manchester City eased their way to a 2-0 victory over Everton at Goodison Park and even chipped in with a goal, fooling keeper Tim Howard with a sneaky finish inside the near post. "Thundered down the left flank, linked well with teammates and shut the door defensively," said Marcotti.
Midfield: While there has been plenty of talk about which players Manchester City will bring in this summer, perhaps their best chance of winning the Premier League once again rests with David Silva, the Spanish genius who has looked utterly magnificent in the three games so far. Nicol described his superb performance as City beat Everton as "poetry in motion," while Mariner summed up the playmaker the best when he said: "Silva was the architect -- he's a joy to watch." An early shout for player of the season.
Midfield: Leicester man Riyad Mahrez has been superb thus far in this nascent season and again saved his team this weekend, scoring an instant riposte after Tottenham took the lead at the King Power stadium. "Ranieri has taken the shackles off and he's running wild," mused Marcotti, while Mariner praised how he seems to be adding consistency to his clear talent. It was our first unanimous selection this week and Nicol added: "Mahrez is on fire at the moment."
Forward: While they had performed admirably in two narrow defeats at the hands of Aston Villa and Liverpool, it was perhaps a concern that Bournemouth hadn't managed to find the net in their two Premier League games before this weekend. However, Callum Wilson changed all that, notching a hat trick as Eddie Howe's side blew away an admittedly rather desperate West Ham side at Upton Park. "West Ham couldn't handle him," gushed Mariner about the man who was playing in League One last year. Nicol was equally effusive in his praise. "Made defenders dance like puppets on a string and punished them with clever, incisive finishes," said Marcotti. If Wilson continues like this, Bournemouth won't have too many problems staying up.
Forward: At various points last season it looked like Bafetimbi Gomis might leave Swansea, his path to regular football blocked by Wilfried Bony. However after the Ivorian's departure to Manchester City, Gomis is the main man in the Swansea attack and they're not missing Bony in the slightest. The Frenchman notched in his third successive Premier League game to help the Swans to a 1-1 draw at Sunderland and although boss Garry Monk might be slightly disappointed with that result, he will be pleased with Gomis. He is proving a reliable source of goals as Swansea look to push on from their strong showing last season.
