The German midfielder was superb as Carlo Ancelotti's
side ran riot against Rayo and the Uruguayan striker helped the
Catalans avoid embarrassment as he set up two at Almeria
Luis Enrique's side came from behind late in the game to seal all three points and are just two behind Madrid in second place, while Valencia, Atletico and Sevilla all lost ground.
Real Sociedad beat champions Atleti 2-1 and Malaga defeated Eibar by the same scoreline on a weekend in which six of the 10 games ended level. Here, we looked at the standout performers from the latest round of action.
In goal, Kiko Casilla was in fine form for Espanyol and helped the Catalans win a point at home to Villarreal with several superb saves in the sides' 1-1 draw at Cornella.
Casilla's team-mate Diego Colotto netted right at the end to rescue that point for Espanyol and also did well in his defensive duties against an impressive Villarreal side. For Athletic Bilbao, meanwhile, Aymeric Laporte was excellent as the Basques became the first visiting side to avoid defeat at Mestalla this season in a goalless game against Valencia. Sergio Ramos scored his 50th goal for Real Madrid, while Jordi Alba was a constant threat for Barcelona and scored the winner for the Catalans in Almeria.
Toni Kroos pulled the strings for Madrid, set up his side's first goal in the 5-1 win over Rayo and netted a wonderful third at the Santiago Bernabeu. Gareth Bale, who scored the opener, also looked lively on his full return from injury, while Gonzalo Castro impressed as Real Sociedad defeated Atletico 2-1.
Carlos Vela and Imanol Agirretxe were both on target as the Basques beat the champions 2-1, while Luis Suarez came off the bench to set up both as Barca came from behind to win at Almeria.
